Oroldo Deleon to the rescue
If you know anything about me, then you know I like to eat. One of the subjects I excelled in while in high school was Lunch. I loved it. In my last post on here I wrote about the 3 deer we invited to dinner. We were exhausted from the climb up the hill to retrieve the very nice buck Collin shot. Then as the sun went down along with the temperature we still had to get all three tagged, back to camp and hung up and get the fire going to cook something to eat. I had eaten 3 apples and drank 2 bottles of water, but I was exhausted. We were all looking foward to getting something to eat but we still had a long ways to go. With 3 deer on the atv there was no room left so Elliott drove the 3 deer up towards camp while Collin and I took that long walk back.
Up the hill then around the hill then up the large hill, and just when you're really exhausted you have to go up another big hill. Oh did I mention all the rocks! Thats right it's like walking through one ginormous (I made up that word) gravel pit with various shapes and sizes of rocks that we walked over. Luckily I bought some comfortable, dependable rugged boots because they were taking a beating. Small rocks, flat rocks, round rocks, sharp rocks, large rocks, huge rocks, rocks on ledges, it's amazing anything grows out there. Each time you take a step you step on a rock that is loose and it's possible to twist your ankle really bad, and as you climb up the hills your footing is really unsure.
As we got back to camp our energy was gone and it was well into the night. We started the lantern to get some light then hung up the deer. Well actually we got two hung up and decided to leave the third one on the atv since we didn't have enough rope and we were exhausted. Now we had a major decision to make. Do we get the fire started to cook something or do we eat cold sandwiches. As we sat to take a break we all decided to eat cold sandwiches since it would be easier and did I mention we were exhausted? As we sat there still trying to muster some energy to walk to the cooler to start the sandwiches we noticed headlights in the distance coming our way.
It wasn't long before the vehicle pulled into camp and we noticed it was Elliotts cousin Oroldo and he turned out to be a lifesaver. He saw how exhausted we were and he said he was going to cook supper for us. He knew we were cold exhausted and what we needed was some warm food to get our energy back, so he started the fire and got out the fajitas we had and seasoned them and then cooked them. He then warmed up the tortillas and served us, and I ate 4 very tasty, tacos or maybe I ate 5. All I know is they were excellent and they hit the spot. I could feel myself getting my energy back but I could also feel my old injuries hurting really bad. With the temperature now below 32 my old injures were aching pretty bad and Elliott also was feeling it in his leg. That sleeping bag and blanket would sure feel good tonight.
Somewhere around 2 or 3 am ice started falling pretty good and it kept on going through day break. Oroldo drove into camp around 0730 and the sleet was coming down pretty good. Now it was a race to get everything packed and get out of there before it got worse. We were at the farthest point or at the end of the road and the weather was getting worse and we needed to get to the main road before the ice made the gravel road impossible to drive on. To make a long story short we made it to the main road and then back to San Antonio.
Did I have fun.....you betcha. Would I do it again....in a heart beat!!! My only regret is I have to wait till the season starts again in 10 months.
